Required answers :-

a) Water has a specific heat of vaporisation which is of 2.23 × 106J/kg. This means that it can remove that amount of energy from a fire before turning into steam. It is a well known fact that water will slow a fire's growth.

b) Carbon dioxide extinguishes work by displacing oxygen, or taking away the oxygen element of the fire triangle.
