Verbs come in three tenses: past, present, and future. The past is used to describe things that have already happened (e.g., earlier in the day, yesterday, last week, three years ago). The present tense is used to describe things that are happening right now, or things that are continuous. The future tense describes things that have yet to happen (e.g., later, tomorrow, next week, next year, three years from now).

The following table illustrates the proper use of verb tenses:

Tenses in the grammar refer to the state of the verb. It explains the action timings through the tense or state of the verb. There are three types of tenses which indicate the timings that are, past, present and future tense.

Past tense refers to the actions happened in the past or  actions which previously existed.

Example: Alex had his dinner after he completed his work.

Present tense refers to the action which is happening in the present or states facts or habit.

Example: My car breaks down frequently.

Future tense refers to the actions which is may or may not happen in future.

Example: We will be punished by the teacher for telling lies.
