Given,

The total weight of the tomatoes = 3 lb

Fraction of the used tomatoes = ⅝

To find,

An equation that shows the number of tomatoes used for the sauce.

Solution,

For the formation of the equation, we need a variable which will stay at the LHS of the final equation.

Let, x = used amount of tomatoes

(Assume, x as a variable to do the further mathematical calculations.)

Mathematical equation establishment :

x = Total weight × Fraction of used tomatoes

x = 3 × ⅝ (By putting the values.)

x = 15/8

[The unit of the RHS will be lb]

Hence, the equation is x = 15/8
