Global environmental problems have surfaced in recent years in the midst of a general upgrading of economic standards in advanced countries. This has been paralleled by rapid growth of poverty, population, and urbanization in less developed countries, and resulted in broadening mutually dependent international relationships. The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED/Earth Summit) was convened in June 1992; among other events, the summit marked the end of the East-West Cold War framework that had existed since the end of World War II, and now encourages international cooperation and action relative to global environmental issues. International efforts concerning environmental conservation relate to global warming, protection of the ozone layer, acid deposition, forests, wildlife, marine environment, transboundary movement of hazardous wastes, desertification, and pollution problems in developing countries.
