ग्लोबल वार्मिंग पृथ्वी की सतह (जमीन और पानी दोनों) के तापमान के साथ-साथ वायुमंडल में वर्तमान वृद्धि है। पिछले 100 वर्षों में दुनिया भर में औसत तापमान 0.75 डिग्री सेल्सियस (1.4 डिग्री फारेनहाइट) बढ़ गया है, इस वृद्धि का दो तिहाई 1975 के बाद से हुआ है।
बहुत पहले, जब पृथ्वी के तापमान में वृद्धि हुई थी तब यह प्राकृतिक कारणों का परिणाम था लेकिन आज यह मानव गतिविधियों द्वारा उत्पादित वातावरण में ग्रीनहाउस गैसों के संचय के कारण हो रहा है।
पिछले 50 वर्षों में, रिकॉर्ड किए गए इतिहास में सबसे तेज दर पर औसत वैश्विक तापमान बढ़ रहा है। और विशेषज्ञों का मानना है कि यह प्रवृत्ति तेजी से बढ़ रही है।
भारत में जलवायु परिवर्तन के कारण पृथ्वी के तापमान में भी छोटी वृद्धि गंभीर प्रभाव डाल रही हैं। पिछली शताब्दी में पृथ्वी का औसत तापमान 1.4 डिग्री फ़ारेनहाइट तक बढ़ गया है और अगले में 11.5 डिग्री फ़ारेनहाइट बढ़ने की उम्मीद है।
जलवायु परिवर्तन के कारण ही ध्रुवीय बर्फ कैप्स के पिघल रहा है और इसी की वजह से समुद्री स्तर बढ़ रहा है और जो अधिक तूफान क्षति में योगदान देता है।
