In the prokaryotic cells , the cell envelope  is made of three layers  but it act as single protective layer. the Glycocalyx is the outermost layer .  it is composed of polysaccrides and some proteins. Its major role is protection and adhesion .

It is of two types :

a) SLIME LAYER which is loose and thin . it prevents water and minerals lose

b) CAPSULE  which is rigid and thick . it provides sticky surface and also hides from immune host system . therefore the capsulated bacteria are pathogenic .
