Kathmandu is an extract from the Heaven Lake travelogue of Vikram Seth, which tells of its long journey from China through Tibet and Nepal via India. This extract tells about his visit to two temples in Nepal-the Pashupatinath and Baudhnath, the most holy shrines of the Hindus and Buddhists, respectively. The following excerpt. He mentions not only the environment inside these temples but also his observations on the surroundings, contrasting with the serenity at the Buddhist stupa with the hectic activities of the Hindu temple.

Although the extract is part of a travel conference and overview of the author's encounters in Kathmandu, it still retains deeper layers of significance. The speaker disapproves the Hindu temple of noise and chaos and admires the absolute serenity of the Buddhist temple. This also reveals how we irresponsibly pollute our rivers to wash clothes, to cremate and store waste in them. The extract conveys the message that the holy places must be kept sacred and peaceful.

Explanation:

  • The environment at Pashupatinath Temple is completely noisay and chaotic, and people who are unfamiliar with this situation, the noise can get on their nerves. People jostle one another in touching God's idol. In India and Nepal, monkeys prevail near temples. They do not live in such perfect harmony with humans. Nobody disturbs them because of Hindu God Hanuman. The hawkers selling their products are usually found in locations such as the temple of Pashuptinath. They try to dupe tourist when selling their wares at common at places like Pashuptinath temple. The heterogeneous crowd of priests, hawkers, devoted persons and visitors makes the atmosphere in the Pashupatinath Temple noisy. Cows and dogs like to move easily around and the pigeons add to the confusion. Monkeys too fight and play in the temple premises. The westerners who visit the temple often generate more confusion
  • On the contrary, Budhnath Stupa's atmosphere is calm. The Buddhist way of worship concerns meditation rather than ceremonial worship of the Hindus. There are many Tibetans who are selling snacks in the Stupa, but there is no large crowd in the Hindu pilgrimage. Calm is near the Pashupatinath temple in contrast to disorder. There is calm as opposed to chaos near the Pashupatinath temple. The writer is so struck by the serenity of the temple and its surroundings that he calls it a haven  of peace that is peacefully standing amidst the busy streets.
