Going downstream a boat cover 50 miles at a speed of 60 mph while returning it take 1 hour 15 minutes to cover the same distance.what is the average speed for the whole journey?

as we know:- speed = distance/time

now,

• time taken in downstream = 50/60 = 5/6hours.

• time taken in upstream = 1 hour 15 min. = 1hr 15/60hr = 5/4hr

therefore,

total time = time taken in downstream + time taken in upstream

=> T = 5/6 + 5/4 = 25/12hr.

now,

average speed = (total distance)/(total time)

=> S = (50 + 50)/(25/12)

=> S = 100 × 12/25

=> S = 48mph.
