The deficiency of the mineral Iodine causes Goitre.

The term is used to describe generalised enlargement of the thyroid glands.

In case of Goitre, anatomy of follicles are variable in size & the epithelial may be thickened or contain projection.

The maximum size of Goiter is up to 1000 grams.

Causes of include :

  • Iodine deficiency
  • Selenium deficiency
  • Auto - immune inflammation
  • Nodules within the thyroid
  • Tumors - begin & maligant
  • Physiological - during pregnancy & puberty
  • Goiters can compress the trachea
