Gold is much less reactive than iron. Over time iron reacts with our oxygen-rich atmosphere, especially if moisture is present. So the form in which iron is found in nature is chemically similar to rust.
Gold on the other hand is a noble metal, it hardly reacts with anything. Even most strong acids will not corrode it.
