There are two type of electric charge:

i) Positive ( carried by proton )

ii) Negative ( carried by electron )

Negative charge: -ve

If an object contains -ve charge than it means that object contain more electrons then protons. According to Benjamin Franklin, electricity was like some sort of fluid. When this fluid left one object and entered another object, the object that lost the fluid became positively charged, and the object that gained fluid became negatively charged.

Positive charge: +ve

If an object contains +ve charge than it means that object contain more protons then electrons. In 1886 Goldstein discovered existence of positively charged rays in the discharge tube by using perforated cathode. These rays were named as anode rays or canal rays.
