Answer:

Rectifier converts AC → DC.

Rectifiers uses diode to make current only pass in one direction (Diode has this feature, allowing current to flow in one direction).

Capacitors are used with diodes to help in smoothing and converting the DC pulsating to somehow steady DC with low ripple.

A very simple Half-Wave rectifier without smoothing capacitor:

  • In the +ve cycle of the AC the diode conducts and the output is same as input.
  • In the -ve cycle of the AC the diode does not conduct and then the voltage is zero across the load resistor, as not no current flowing then [math]V = R_L*0 = 0[/math]
