Good morning students welcome to your SST class
I think all of you have watched the video which I sent yesterday.
Today we'll see Why the Revolution broke out in France?
Though there were many more causes but we will focus on only five causes that is given in your textbook.
1. Political cause -
i)Louis XVI who ascended the throne in 1774 A.D. believed in the theory of the Divine Rights of the King.
ii) He regarded himself as the representative of God on the earth.
iii) He was autocratic and despotic. His will was the law.
iv) Administrative system was defective and disorganised.
2. Social cause -
i) In the Old Regime the French society was feudal in nature and divided into Estates. The clergy came under the first estate, the nobility under the second estate. The businessman, merchants, court officials, lawyers, peasants, artisans, landless labourers, servants all comes under the third estates.
ii) The clergy and nobility enjoy privileges based on birth. They enjoyed a total or partial exemption from taxation. Almost all the high posts were reserved for them. They formed a small portion of the population but owned a major portion of the land. They were further entitled to enjoy some feudal privileges that is to collect feudal dues from the peasants.
iii) The unprivileged class included the bourgeoise (the upper middle class), the labourers, artisans, servants and the peasants. The burden of taxes was borne by the people of third estate alone.
iv) The peasants formed about 90% of the population. But only small number of them owned the land they cultivated. They were heavily texed and lived a miserable life. They were bound to provide free labour to the feudal lords to work in their house, fields, to work in building roads etc.
v) The traders, merchants, and manufacturers formed the majority of the rising middle class. They were gradually growing in importance, power and prosperity.
vi) The social inequalities led to the growth of ever increasing discontentment among the people of the middle class. The rising middle class was the most receptive to new ideas and values. The people belonging to the upper middle class were educated and had a broader outlook. They were not prepared to accept idea of divine rights and privileges based on birth.
Students today we will discuss only these two causes. On the basis of these two causes I am giving some questions to you solve it immediately and send it to me within the stipulated time.
