Required solution :-

Crystallization

When a chemical is converted from a liquid solution into a solid crystalline state is called crystallization.

It has a fixed number of molecules present in one formula of a unit of salt. Crystal salts with water of crystallization are known as hydrates. The other name for crystallization is hydration.

There are three types of crystallization:

  • Evaporative crystallization
  • Cooling crystallization
  • Reactive crystallization

Applications of crystallization:

  • Purification of seawater
  • Separation of alum crystals from impurities

This process is practiced in order to obtain pure crystals of a substance from an impure mixture. It is also used to obtain pure salt from sea water, pure alum crystals from an impure alum etc. This process is more effective than evaporation since it also separates the soluble impurities.

Examples of crystallization:

  • Copper sulphate
  • Calcium sulphate
  • Stalagmites and stalactites
