According to latest sign conventions

1. Work done is taken negative if it is done by the system since energy of system is decreased.

eg. Expansion of gas.

2. Work done is taken positive if it is done on the system, since energy ot system is increased.

eg. Compression work.

3. Work done by system or work done on surrounding by system is negative work.

4. Work done on system or work done by surrounding on system is positive work.

THERMODYNAMICS :-

SIGN CONVENTION :-

1) WORK DONE :-

♻️ Work done on the system taken as Positive .

  • w (work done) = +ve = \rm{w^+}

  1. Example :- Compression .

♻️ Work done by the system taken as Negative .

  • w (work done) = -ve = \rm{w^-}

  1. Example :- Expansion .

2) HEAT :-

♻️ Heat absorbed by the system taken as Positive .

  • Q (Heat) = +ve = \tt{Q^+}

♻️ Heat envolved by the system taken as Negative .

  • Q (Heat) = -ve = \tt{Q^-}
