Ranji discovers a pool in the summer holidays
During his stay in Rajpur in the summer holidays from school, Ranji roamed around alone over the hills and forests. He had not made any friends. He wore only a vest and shorts as it was extremely hot and dusty. The earth was dry, the trees had wilted and the grass was all burnt, waiting for a cool shower of rain. That was when Ranji discovered a clear, inviting pool in the forest. It was fed by a stream coming from within a group of rocks. In the summer it had a weak flow of water though during monsoons it must be quite full and strong. The pool had not dried up as the rocks held the water.
Ranji immediately dived into the pool with such clean and glossy water. In his hometown of Rajputana, he had swum only in pools with muddy and sticky water where buffaloes also bathed and people washed clothes.
Ranjis presence at the pool questioned by the Warrior
Ranji rested on the yellow rocks in the shade of trees after swimming in the pool for an hour the next day. Then he saw a boy glaring at him. He was older than Ranji, taller and more solidly built. He questioned Ranjis presence at the pool, which he proclaimed to be his. He informed Ranji he was a Warrior and did not like to deal with villagers like him. He asked Ranji to leave. Ranji replied he was a Fighter.
Fight for supremacy over the pool
The stranger threatened Ranji with dire consequences and finally slapped him across the face as he did not budge. In reply, Ranji boxed his face. They fought violently, rolling over land and in shallow water.
When nobody had won after five minutes of hitting each other, the two boys stood back to catch their breath. The stranger asked Ranji if he realized that he was a Warrior and Ranji told him he was a Fighter yet again. As Ranji decided not to back down and leave the pool, the stranger announced they would have to continue the fight the next day if Ranji still dared to show up. They dressed up and left the forest by different ways.
Short-lived relief in the bazaar
It became tough for Ranji to explain the injuries to his mother who asked him to stay home for the rest of the day. Still, he managed to sneak out to the bazaar, where he enjoyed hotjalebisand sweet lemonade. His enjoyment was short-lived as he met his enemy and they both stared angrily at each other.
Ranjis misery the next day
Though it was extremely hot the next day and his body hurt due to the various injuries, he had to go back to the pool. If he did not show up, it would be accepting defeat quietly. He knew he would lose that days fight as he was sore, but he would still try. He could have a right over the pool till the time he fought. He hoped that the Warrior would have forgotten the challenge, but he saw him standing ready for a fight across the pool.
Challenge and counter-challenge
The Warrior asked Ranji to come across to his side and fight, and Ranji challenged him to do the same. The stranger then mocked him saying he could perhaps not swim the length of the pool. Ranji made most of this opportunity to show his superiority as he was a very good swimmer. He dived beautifully into the pool and the Warrior was taken aback.
The ice-breaker: Ranjis dive
The Warrior was immensely impressed with his dive and said he could only jump in straight. But he was willing to learn. Ranji asked him to stand with his arms outstretched on top of his head and let his head displace the feet. The warrior tried to dive in but fell stiffly, flat on his stomach in the water. Ranji laughed amusedly and asked if the Warrior was trying to empty the pool. He demonstrated another perfect dive and, swimming under water, surprised the other boy by coming up behind him.
Adversaries become good friends
The Warrior tried unsuccessfully to swim under water. Ranji agreed to teach him how to dive and swim under water. The Warrior threatened to beat him otherwise. He introduced himself as Suraj and said he was training to be a wrestler, and so drank almost aseerof milk daily. He would make the bony Ranji into apehelwan. It would then be a fair deal. Ranji agreed though he knew Suraj was getting a better deal in the agreement. Both of them became friends, vowing to protect their pool. Ranji realized he had won.
