Answer:

Two Village Boys: mending the world

  • Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne is considered to be one of the best children’s classics of all time. It was written by Upendra Kishore Ray Chowdhury, the grandfather of the Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray, in the year 1915 and it was first published in the Bengali children’s magazine called ‘Sandesh’.
  • The story revolves around two good-hearted village boys, who resolves the dispute among two countries/states with their consultation.
  • The boys, namely, Goopy and Bagha were granted 3 boons by the king of Ghosts, who was very delighted after hearing them sing and play the drums.
  • With these boons, they were able to ‘stun’ their listeners, they were able to eat and wear anything they want, along with that they were able to travel to any place they want.
  • While roaming few countries, they end up in ’Shundi’ were they resolved the dispute between its neighbouring state ‘Halla’, who’s king happened to be the twin brother of the king of ’Shundi’.
  • The story was later made into a film by Satyajit Ray, in the year 1969, produced by the Govt of West Bengal. Later on, two more movies were made on these colourful characters called ‘Hirak Rajar Deshe’ (1980) and ‘Goopy Bagha Fire Elo’ (1992) .
