Madame Loisel borrowed Madame Forestier's imitation necklace to wear to a prestigious ball and was under the impression that Madame Forestier's necklace was authentic. After losing Madame Forestier's imitation necklace, worth only five hundred fancs, Madame Loisel and her husband bought a genuine diamond necklace worth thirty-six thousand francs. Knowing that they could not immediately afford the thirty-six thousand francs to pay for the authentic diamond necklace that resembled Madame Forestier's jewels, Madame Loisel's husband used his entire inheritance and took out loans to buy the expensive necklace. Madame Loisel contributed to the cost of the new necklace by dismissing her servant, moving into a cheaper apartment, and doing all of the household chores by herself. Madame Loisel's husband was forced to pick up a second job, and the couple worked endlessly for ten years to pay off the genuine necklace. Madame Loisel's appearance also suffered as a result of working hard to pay off the expensive necklace. She aged many years and drained her once youthful energy to help pay off the debts she owed. At the end of the story, Madame Loisel discovered that Madame Forestier's necklace was an imitation that was only worth five hundred francs.

hope it helps:-)
