The scientist who defined gram positive and gram negative bacteria : CHRISTIN GRAM.

●GRAM POSITIVE BACTERIA:

Cell wall made up of peptidoglycan+teichoic acid.

Stain remain persistant.

Cell wall single layered.

Thickness of cell wall= 20-80 nm.

Teichoic acid present. It provides stability to the plasma membrane.

Only 2 rings in flagella present — S and M.

Very low lipid content.

Less bacteria are pathogenic.

●GRAM NEGATIVE BACTERIA:

Cell wall made up of peptidoglycan.

Statin removes because stain is
soluble in water and insoluble in lipid.

An additional layer of glycolipid is present in the cell wall.

Thickness = 8-12 nm.

Teichoic acid absent.

All 4 rings in flagella present — L,P,S and M.

High lipid content.

Most bacteria are pathogenic.
