The role of a bacterial cell wall is defensive. peptidoglycan present in the cell wall plays a major role in such mechanisms.

gram positive  bacteria are more sentitive to antimicrobial agents such as antibiotics (pennicilin) .

gram positive bacteria have 90% of their cell wall as peptidoglycans which are well exposed for the antibiotics to work on . the antibiotics break down the peptidoglycans faster.

gram positive layer have a thin layer of peptidoglycan protected under a layer of lipid hence it is not well exposed to antimicrobial agents. therefore are not much sentitive.
