Actually the force of impact will increase till the graph reaches its peak value after that it will decrease to minimum . so calculating the area after peak value will give change in momentum after impact i.e m(v2 - v1 ) and calculating the area before impact will give change in momentum till the maximum impact . Coefficient of restitution is velocity of separation divided by velocity of approach . So dividing the first value by second will give the value of e .
