As others have stated, graphite can be used as a lubricant do to its layered cristaline structure. These layers can slide over each other quite easily and thus have a lubrication property. However I really don't consider it a good lubricant, there are lots of better and more modern options available. A good quality modern lubricant should not contain any graphite at all.
