Thank you Mr. Chairman / Madam Chairperson,
First of all, on behalf of the Minister of Health of Indonesia, I would like to express
my government sincere appreciation and gratitude to the WHO as well as the
Government of United Kingdom and the OECD for organizing the First WHO
Ministerial Conference on Global Action against Dementia. It is a great honour for
Indonesia to actively participate in this Conference.
Indonesia is of the view that the themes for our two days meeting are indeed timely to
facilitate a dialogue on the provision of coordinated multidisciplinary care and
support to people with dementia.
Indonesia currently has more than 10% of the population in elderly of age 60 years
and above with possibly suffering from dementia. According to data of World
Alzheimer Report 2012, the number of people of dementia in Indonesia will increase
from 960,000 in 2013 to 1,890,000 in 2030 and expected become 3.98 million in
2050. Therefore, it is important for our policy makers, healthcare professionals, and
particularly our community care providers and partners to continuously enhance
awareness and better understanding on developments in dementia policies and care
services. The Government of Indonesia commits to improve its national action and
coordination to address problems and challenges of dementia in Indonesia.
Mr. Chairman / Madam Chairperson,
Indonesia shares the facts that dementia patients have a high chance of deteriorating
rapidly if undiagnosed. The burden of dementia also has profound impact not only on
the life of the afflicted person, but also on the lives of those around them: their
spouses, partners, family and friends. This is why early diagnosis and intervention are
important to better manage the condition. Recognizing the early warning signs of
dementia and knowing the preventive and protective factors will reduce the risk or
delay the onset of dementia. I am pleased to note that this meeting has an objective to
address the issue of early detection.
In this regard, I would like to share the Government of Indonesia policy and strategic
steps against dementia that are include as follows:
First, develop a strategic plan across related sector to work together, hand in hand to
fight dementia. There are seven action plans, namely:
a) Public Awareness Campaign and Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles.
b) Human Rights Advocacy for Persons with Dementia and its Companion.
c) Early Detection, Diagnosis and Procedure Holistic Cognitive Problems and
Dementia.
d) Information Access and Quality Services.
e) System Strengthening Human Resources.
f) Cognitive Systems Strengthening Health Program as a major factor with Life
