Given:

The gravitational force between masses M1 and M2 is F if the third mass M3 is placed between M1 and M2

To Find:

The force between M1 and M2.

Solution:

The force between the objects remains the same and it doesn't matter how many masses are around them.

As it is between M1 and M2 the value of M3 will be half the mass of the two bodies.

According to Sir Newton's gravitational law, the magnitude of gravitational force F between objects of mass M1 and M2 separated by a distance R is given by,

F = G\frac{M_{1}M_{2}  }{R^{2} }  ..(i)

Now, if the distance between them is doubled i.e., 2R then the gravitational force will be

F' = G\frac{M_{1} M_{2} }{2R^{2} }

    = G\frac{M_{1} M_{2} }{4R^{2} }

Now, using equation (i)

F' = F/4
