The greased Cartridge acted as a spark in the revolt of 1857 because ,most of the sepoys in British army were Indians . Inorder to load the rifle , they had to bite the greased paper.

A rumour made the revolt more severe. The rumour was that the greased paper in the rifles consisted of fat of cows and pigs.The religious concequences of Hindus and Muslims , made them react severely which made the revolt more severe.
