The Greater Himalayas and Middle Himalayas come under the category of the divisions of the Himalayas.

Himalayas:

  1. The Himalayas are the largest mountain range in Asia that splits up the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau.
  2. They are stretched from west to east, from the Indus to the Brahmaputra river.
  3. The mountain ranges are filled with glaciers, gorges, deep valleys, and the highest peaks in the world.
  4. It is divided into three ranges. They are the Outer Himalayas, Middle Himalayas, and the Inner Himalayas.
  • The Greater Himalayas:

       (i) They are the northernmost range of the Himalayas known as Himadri or Greater Himalayas.

       (ii) They cover 2400 km. from west to east with a width of about 120-190 km with an average height of the mountains is 6000 m.

       (iii) The rivers the Yamuna and the Ganga originate from this Himalaya.

  • The Middle Himalayas:

       (i) They are known as Himachal or Lesser Himalayas.

       (ii) It is the middle section of the vast Himalayan Mountain Range.

       (iii) Their range runs between the Shivalik range to the southeast and the Great Himalayas to the northeast.

       (iv) Their average width is 50 km, and the average height of these mountains is 3700 – 4500 m and extends to 2,400 km.
