The optimum quantity of greenhouse gases is necessary for the atmosphere because they help sustain life on the earth, making it the only well-maintained and habitable planet in our known extent of the universe.

  • The sunlight is the ultimate source of energy that makes the earth habitable.
  • We know that about 30 percent of solar energy radiant on the earth gets reflected in space.
  • The greenhouse gasses aid the rest of 70 percent (approximate) of sunlight to pass through the atmosphere to reach the earth.
  • The land, water bodies, and greenhouse gasses present in the atmosphere absorb the sunlight that reaches the earth's surface.
  • A portion of this absorbed heat is then radiated back into the atmosphere in the form of invisible infrared light.
  • The fact is that some of this radiated infrared light somehow manages to escape into space, but it is the greenhouse gasses that come into play to act like a 'blanket' to trap the lion's share of almost 90 percent of this radiated heat.
  • The greenhouse gases absorb this large portion of radiated heat and redirect them back to the earth, thus causing an increase in the earth's temperature.
  • During the night on the earth (during the absence of sunlight), this trapped heat helps to maintain the temperature. Thus it refrains that area from getting cold with the sunset.
  • However, the quantity of greenhouse gases above the optimum level in the atmosphere initiates a further increase in the earth's temperature. This condition is not helpful for life on this planet, as it causes climate change.
  • Thus the optimum quantity of greenhouse gases is necessary for the atmosphere because they help sustain life on the earth, maintain the earth's temperature and ensure the habitable zone on this planet for life to flourish.
