Greenhouse effect definition causes effects and prevention
Answers
The only way an object (a planet or satellite or spacecraft) in the vacuum of space gains or loses energy is through radiation.
The energy radiated by an object is a function of its black body temperature.
The energy radiated and the energy absorbed have to balance. If the object absorbs more energy it goes to a higher temperature to radiate more energy.
The Greenhouse gases (H20, CO2, CH4 and many others) are able to absorb energy being radiated at some wavelengths and then re-radiate it. They are transparent at other wavelengths. Satellites and Spacecraft have no atmospheres.
The radiation of energy from a planet is in all directions. The radiation from a Greenhouse gas is in all directions too but as the gases surround the planet about half of it goes BACK towards the planet. That energy didn’t leave.
In order to get enough energy to leave the planet to achieve energy balance the planet gets warmer. This works more like a blanket than a greenhouse in some ways… but it is called a greenhouse because the energy comes in through the transparent (at the wavelengths radiated by the Sun) atmosphere.
