Lifting anything adds potential energy due to height, and that potential energy can be released by allowing it to drop down to a lower level. The amount of potential energy is a product of the height of the thing times its mass.
In the case of a dam, the water is kept at a higher level than the river it's flowing into, and there's generally huge quantities of it. The water "wants" to flow downward, but can't, because we have it penned in. The only path we allow it to flow downward is through turbines, which convert the potential energy it had into motion (and then into electricity), and only then allow it to get down lower than it was

before the going in turbines there they have potential energy because it's speed is soo much slow but after going in turbines they got kinetic energy.hope it's help you
