Answer: Griffin was a scientist who had actually made a major discovery. It was invisibility. However his actions and deeds, like setting the house on fire, and stealing money from the clergyman, greatly undermined his discovery. His discovery was also not acknowledged because of his temper and rude behavior.

Also, he uses his power of invisibility for his own benefit and not for the society. A true scientist would always make sure that his works are used for the betterment of the society and country. But since Griffin was rather lawless and selfish, he didn't acknowledge the needs and advancement of the society. Thus, Griffin is not a true scientist.
