Grignard reagent should be prepared under anhydrous conditions.Why?

Answer: Grignard reagents are very reactive. In the presence of moisture, they react to give alkanes. Therefore, Grignard reagents should be prepared under anhydrous conditions.The Grignard reagent should be prepared under anhydrous conditions as it reacts with water to give the corresponding alkane.  

R-MgBr + H2O———>R-H +MgBr(OH)
