group Oxidation state is the most stable state for the lighter elements in the group. However the oxidation state two unit less than the group Oxidation State becomes progressively more stable for the heavier elements in each group
What does these lines mean?? ​

Answer:

In my class 11 chemistry NCERT book ,there is a line in chapter P-block.

The line is

The oxidation state two unit less than the group oxidaton state become progressively more stable for heavier elements in each group . Due to 'inert pair effect'

I could not understand this , what they meant to conclude from it.

Can anybody explain me with an example.
