Grouping of Data into Class Intervals
For convenience, we condense the given data into groups, when the number of observations is fairly large. Then, we
note down the frequency of observations falling in each group.
Thus, the presentation of data in groups along with the group frequencies is called frequency distribution of the grouped
data.
Following terms are to be kept in mind before grouping data into class intervals:
(i) Upper limit: The number on the right of a class interval is called the upper limit.
(ii) Lower limit: The number on the left of a class interval is called the lower limit.
(iii) Class intervals: Each grouped data is called a class interval.
(iv) Class mark: The mid-value of each class interval is called its class mark. It is obtained by adding the lower
and upper class limits of any class and dividing the sum by 2.
(v) Class size: The difference between the two limits of any class is called the width of the interval or the class
size.
