Growth and yield of acid lime seedlings inoculated with tristeza strains

Acid lime seedlings preimmunized with one of the very mild strain (S₁) of tristeza have been tested in six different locations of South India. The mild strain inoculated seedlings continued to make satisfactory growth and are comparable with healthy seedlings. In places like Periyakulam (Tamilnadu) and Tirupathi (Andhra Pradesh) the mild strain behaved still milder by showing very few vein flecks and occasional wood pits. The field observations on growth, circumference, volume and yield records showed that the mild strain could safely be recommended to different regions of South India to rebuild the devasted acid lime industry. Semenzali di Limetta acida [Citrus aurantifolia (Christm.) Swing.] preimmunizzati con un ceppo attenuato (S₁) di « tristeza » sono stati saggiati in 6 differenti località dell'India meridionale. I semenzali inoculad con il ceppo attenuato hanno avuto uno sviluppo soddisfacente del tutto paragonabile a quello dei semenzali sani. E in due località (Periyakulan e Tirupathi) il ceppo attenuato ha anzi causato pochissimi ingiallimenti nervali e solo occasionalmente sintomi di butteratura del legno. Le osservazioni di campo su sviluppo, accrescimento radiale del tronco e produzione hanno messo in evidenza che l'impiego del ceppo attenuato può essere raccomandato nel Sud dell'India per ricostituire gli impianti di Limetta acida gravemente compromessi dalla « tristeza ».
