There are specific cells in plants which undergo division throughout their life time. These cells are called meristematic cells.

A meristem is a tissue that contains undifferentiated cells, which later on become specialized organs.

There are 3 types of meristem depending upon their location:

- Apical meristem- They are present at the root and shoot tips

- Intercalary meristem- they are present near the nodes and at inter-nodes

- Lateral meristem- these cells help in the increase in the diameter and girth of the plant.
