The socialist movement started in Europe from the mid 19th century. This movement started as a protest against the injustices of the capitalist system in which the rich capitalists earned high profits but workers had to live in poverty. The socialists were against private property and wanted to establish a more equal and humane society where everybody could share in the benefits of economic growth. The socialist movement gained great support among workers who began forming associations to fight for better living and working conditions. The Russian Revolution of 1917 led to the establishment of the first socialist government.
