Explanation:

HCl have a pivotal role in digestion. It is secreted by parietal cells (oxyntic cells) of gastric glands in the stomach.

Some of the important functions of HCl include:

  1. Maintains a lower pH(≈2) which is required for the conversion of inactive pepsinogen into active pepsin.In infants, it is required for the conversion of inactive Prorennin into rennin.
  2. Inactivates salivary amylase (Ptyalin) by lowering pH.(Ptyalin requires a pH of 6.8 to act on starch)
  3. Kills foreign bodies including a variety of bacterias present in the food.
