Explanation:
HCl have a pivotal role in digestion. It is secreted by parietal cells (oxyntic cells) of gastric glands in the stomach.
Some of the important functions of HCl include:
- Maintains a lower pH(≈2) which is required for the conversion of inactive pepsinogen into active pepsin. In infants, it is required for the conversion of inactive Prorennin into rennin.
- Inactivates salivary amylase (Ptyalin) by lowering pH.(Ptyalin requires a pH of 6.8 to act on starch)
- Kills foreign bodies including a variety of bacterias present in the food.
Hope this helps you!!!
