Following methods could have been used to test purity of milk in case lacto meter was not invented :-

1) Slip Test : Run the drop of milk on smooth or polished surface to check its purity. Pure milk leaves some residue and traces behind. However, milk mixed with water will simply flow through.

2) Reduction Test : Boil milk on slow heat for 3 hours till it solidifies and become hard popularly known as Khoya. Rock solid or rough residue means the milk is adulterated while oily residue indicates milk is of good quality.
