The Gujarat earthquake of 2001 is also known as the Bhuj earthquake.

It occurred on 26 January, India's 52nd Republic Day, at 8:46 AM and lasted for more than 2 minutes.

The epicentre of the quake was somewhat 9 km south-southwest of the village of Chobari in Bhachau Taluka of Kutch District of Gujarat, India.

The earthquake reached 7.7 on the moment magnitude scale.

It had a maximum felt intensity of X (Extreme) on the Mercalli intensity scale.

The earthquake killed between 13,800 and 20,000 people and injured another 1,67,000.

It destroyed nearly 400,000 homes and caused hardships in all the mentioned districts.
