The earthquake which hit Gujarat on 26 January 2001, mainly affected Bhuj, Ahmedabad and the Kutch area. Hundreds of villages were destroyed in the earthquake. Measuring a high 7.7 on the MMS (Moment Magnitude Scale), the temblor took about 13,000 – 20,000 lives (including some deaths reported in Pakistan).
