Answer:

2m/s

Explanation:

Let mass and velocity of ball be m1=0.05kg and velocity v1=200m/s.

Let mass of gun be m2=5kg and recoil velocity be v2

Use conservation of momentum.

m1v1=m2v2

(0.05)×(200)=(5)v2

V2=2m/s.

Hence,

option A is correct answer.

SOLUTION

GIVEN

  • A gun fires a bullet of mass 25g with velocity 200 m/s.

  • The mass of the gun is 5kg

TO DETERMINE

The recoil velocity of gun

EVALUATION

Here by the given condition

Mass of bullet = 25 g = m = 0.025 kg

Velocity of bullet = v = 200 m/s

Mass of gun = M = 5 kg

Velocity of gun = V = ?

Now the law of conservation of momentum states that the total momentum before explosion is equal to the total momentum after explosion.

Since initial velocities are zero

So we have

0 = mv + MV

 \sf{ \implies \: 0 = (0.025  \times 200) + (5 \times V)}

 \sf{ \implies \: (5 \times V) = -  5  }

 \sf{ \implies \:  V= -  1 }

Negative sign indicates that velocity of gun and bullet is in opposite direction

Hence the recoil velocity of gun = 1 m/s
