Gun recoils when it fires a bullet. why

in order to conserve the total momentum....
as change in momentum is zero when no external force is acting on the body

When a gun is fired ,it exerts a forward force on the bullet.The bullet exerts an equal and opposite force on the gun.

This results in the recoil of the gun.
