Guru Nanak ( century 1469-1539) preached his ideas much in the same way as Kabir and other monotheists, but due to various developments later his teachings led to the we emergence of a mass religion, Sikhism. He belonged to a caste of traders called Khatri and was born in a village in Punjab now known as Nakana Sahib. in his later life he travelled widely to preach his ideas. Eventually he settled in a place in Punjab now known as Dera Baba Nanak. There he attracted a large number of disciples. The hymns composed by him we're Incorporated in the Adi Granth by the fifth Sikh Guru Arjan in 1604. To this compilation were added the writings of other figures like Shaikh Farid, Sant Kabir, Bhagat Namdev and Guru Tegh Bahadur. In 1706,this compilation was authenticated by his son and successor, Guru Gobind Singh . It is now known as Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of the Sikhs.
