Guru Purnima Festival in India is celebrated in June or July to commemorate all the great enlightened masters, gurus, and teachers who dedicated their lives to self-realization and enlightenment and spreading the light of enlightenment all around without any purpose of personal gain.
There are a few historical references associated with the day. For Hindus the day is special as Rishi Vyasa, the author of Mahabharta wa born on this day. Buddhists observe this day as Lord Buddha gave his first sermon on this day.
