Answer:

That is the symbol of the Tao, or Dao, a Chinese word which means ‘the Way’. It represents the ‘Way of Nature’, according to the Chinese poets and philosophers.

It is also known as the Yin/Yang symbol. Yin is the passive, female, dark, cool, earth side of the symbol. Yang is the active, male, bright, hot, heaven side of the symbol. Both sides are necessary, and continually rise from each other.

The Way of Nature is change, changing from bright to dark, and back to bright. From cold to hot, and back to cold. From active to passive, and back to active. The cycles are constant and continuous. From winter to summer, and back to winter.

There is also a more specific meaning in Chinese cosmology.

In the traditional Chinese cosmological model, Earth is at the center of the cosmos. Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, and Venus sit on the four corners of the cosmos, representing the elements Fire, Wood, Water, and Metal. The center element, Earth, is represented by the planet Saturn. The Yin/Yang symbol is the symbol for Saturn as element Earth at the center of the cosmos. The element Earth binds the other elements together, sitting in balance in the center.

This sacred center can be thought of as the Earth in a geocentric universe, it can also be thought of as the North Pole Star at the center of the heavens.

In the city of Beijing, China, the Emperor was called the Son of Heaven. It was the Emperor’s job to stand at special divine platforms north and south of Beijing during the summer and winter solstices, and call the sun back, to keep it from drifting forever away. If the sun continued to drift forever northward or southward during the solstices, the earth would be left behind to die, boiling or freezing until all life was extinguished.

It was the function of the Emperor to call the sun, moon and sky back to balance, to pull them back to the center, to cause them to turn around and return to the center of the cosmos. The Emperor stood at the center of the cosmos to do this, in a way. The city of Beijing was a model of the cosmos.

Tienanmen Square, in Beijing, has a wall where the Emperor stood to review his troops. Today, the Communist regime stand there to review the troops. Tienanmen Square wall is painted violet, because this is the traditional color of the North Pole Star, Polaris, in Chinese cosmology.

By standing there, the Emperor became, or embodied the Pole Star. As the universe appears to swing and circle around the Pole Star, so the universe swung and circled around the Emperor. The Emperor was the center of the universe.

China was seen as the Middle Kingdom at the center of the world.

In ancient Sumerian star maps, the North Pole was associated with planet Saturn. Also, according to Roman mythology, the North Pole was associated with planet Saturn. During the Roman Saturnalia, the god Saturn was said to travel to the North Pole to carry back the newborn baby Adonis of the New Year.
