Answer:
The small intestine or small bowel is an organ in the gastrointestinal tract where most of the end absorption of nutrients and minerals from food takes place. It lies between the stomach and large intestine, and receives bile and pancreatic juice through the pancreatic duct to aid in digestion. The small intestine is about 20 feet (6 meters) long and folds many times to fit in the abdomen. Originally the small intestine is the longest but it is called the small intestine because its width is smaller when compared to the large intestine.
The small intestine has three distinct regions – the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. The duodenum, the shortest, is where preparation for absorption through small finger-like protrusions called villi begins.[2] The jejunum is specialized for the absorption through its lining by enterocytes: small nutrient particles which have been previously digested by enzymes in the duodenum. The main function of the ileum is to absorb vitamin B12, bile salts, and whatever products of digestion were not absorbed by the jejunum.
Small Intestine :-
- It is the longest organ in the alimentary canal or the gut which helps in the final digestion and the absorption of food.
- It recieved secretions from liver and pancreas for the digestion of fats, proteins and carbohydrates.
- Intestinal juice neutralizes hydrochloric acid coming from the stomach; releases gastrointestinal hormones into the bloodstream.
- The Intestinal juice also and contains digestive enzymes that facilitate the digestion and absorption of food.
- It is known as succus entericus.

The inner surface of small intestine bears small finger structures called villi on which microvilli are present which increase the surface area for absorption of food
