The JFM ( joint forest management ) functions in India by preserving and developing forest by involving local people . The JFM programme was prsued vigorously and as a result JFM resolution has now been adopted in all the states .

  • The Joint Forest Management (JFM) is a popular movement in India to protect our forests by the joint partnership of State forest departments and local authorities of village.

  • In India, It is mentioned in the National Forest Policy of 1988 and the guidelines of Joint Forest Management of 1990 of the Government of India.

In India, This concept was introduced in order to make the relationship stronger between forest department and local authorities who has different set of responsibilities. Combination of which, will build the trust among them.

  • This Joint Forest Management was first initiated in West Bengal in 1980's for the protection of forests from illegal harvesting.

After the consecutive success, it received national importance in by Government of India. As of now, all the states and union territories are involved in JFM covering a total forest area of more than 140,000 Kilometer square.
