It is due to meiosis that the chromosome number is maintained in the daughter cells.

  • As a result of meiosis, daughter cells with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell are formed. The sperm cell and the egg cell divide by meiosis due to which these cells have haploid number of gametes. When the egg cell and the sperm cell unite, the number of chromosomes becomes diploid in the daughter cell.
  • In asexual reproduction, exact copies of the parent cell are produced. Hence, the chromosome number is maintained in asexual daughter cells.
  • Example: humans reproduce by sexual reproduction whereas amoeba reproduce by asexual reproduction.
