Person moves 70m east and 30m west. Thus, his total distance travelled is 100m. But, since his destination is only 40m away from start, 40m is his displacement.

(ii) If the person moves 30m in N direction, his total distance will not change since he moves 70+30 m. However, his displacement will increase.

(iii) Distance is 50cm. Displacement is 30cm

The ant starts at x = 20cm and walks to x = -20cm which is a distance of 40cm. Then, it walks back to x = -10, which adds another 10cm to its distance. Thus, distance is 50cm.

The ant's initial position is x = 20m and its final position is x = -10m. Thus, his displacement is 30m.
