A ship has large volume compared to its mass which makes the density lesser than water. So it floats.

A needle has low volume, so density is greater than that of water. So it sinks.

Hey!!

A needle sinks in water because it has a density more than that of water, whereas a ship made of steel or any other material floats on water because the inner part of ship is hollow and contains air in it, which makes it possible to float.
